Define Your Objectives - First Truth

This is the third in a series of blogs on Truth as a part of the Armor of God.

The Apostle Paul knew nothing about airplanes and automatic landing systems, but in his letter to the Colossians he gave us three truths which we can use to let Jesus Christ control our life. It is interesting to me how close these truths are to the operation of an automatic landing system.

The first truth is found in Colossians 3:1, “set your sights on the realities of heaven”. The phrase "set your sights on” can also be translated "aim at" and refers to an active search. In this passage Paul talked about the preeminence of Jesus Christ and encouraged us to actively aim at the things above, where Jesus Christ sits. This implies we should not be aiming at the things in the world.

In the flight simulator it was necessary to aim the airplane at the aircraft carrier before the automatic landing system could be turned on. The ship's radar would track each approaching airplane and send back landing signals which lead the airplane safely to the ship's deck lined up with the landing strip. Once the airplane's automatic landing system was engaged it immediately began searching for these landing signals. If the airplane was not properly positioned, or if it was too far away, it would not see these signals and the automatic landing system was unable to land the airplane.

Similarly, we need to be actively looking for the guidance signals Jesus Christ is sending and let Him direct our path. If our focus is on things in the world then we will not see the guidance signals Jesus Christ is sending to us because we are not aiming at Him. Our objective should be to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ, and we can't do this very effectively if we are not looking to Him for direction!

Use the Right Sensors

These sensors are used by the automatic landing system to stabilize and guide the airplane as it flies toward the aircraft carrier.

Apply the Proper Feedback

Using the wrong feedback takes us farther away from our desired course. Using the right feedback continually brings us back on course.
